Directing the spread, part 2

I loved the idea of this story -- finding the most expensive things in Denver -- from cowboy boots to hamburgers to cocktails to apartment rentals. But how to display it? I came up with the idea of origami made out of money. After a lot of research, many phone calls and several crumpled dollar bills, a designer stepped in to fold the dollar symbol that eventually anchored this award-winning page.

I adore a good list story, so when one of our reporters came up with the idea of doing a giant list of random lists, I jumped on it. I asked everyone in the department to submit short lists and thought they'd look great displayed Mondrian-style. When I took this section in to the daily news meeting the day before it published, I watched happily as every editor instantly became engaged, reading it from top to bottom.
